More Q&A
Masonry and Lighting
Masonry:
Many of our more high end projects will incorporate some type of masonry or stucco columns, or railing
system. You can look at our photo gallery for more examples of this. In most cases, as many or few columns or pillars can be installed as you desire. Brick, faux stone, and stucco columns are a classic and very visually appealing addition to any project. Common column sizes range from 12” square to 24” square. The higher the structure from the ground, typically a larger column will look more appropriate. We encourage clients with a walkout basement deck to pick a column 16” or larger. Lighting:
Outdoor lighting is perhaps the most budget friendly way to add that finishing touch to any project. Two types of lighting are available. Low voltage (12W) systems can be found in any local home improvement store. Low voltage systems will come with a transformer that will plug into an exterior outlet, and reduce the current to the applicable desired wattage. Low voltage systems typically cost the least, and require no electrical permit or electrician to install. Low voltage systems are typically not installed with a switch, they normally run from a light sensor or timer, or in conjunction with both. The other option is a line voltage, or 110 current. This is the same wiring found for all of your common household electrical outlets and lights. Line voltage does require a licensed electrician, and will cost more than a low voltage system. However, line voltage systems can be run on a switch at the back door just like any other exterior light. Once installed, they are as reliable as any other light fixture. Though more costly, they are rock solid reliable, and offer additional features such as dimmer control and multiple circuit options.
